Lidoriki Short Film Festival: by Yannis Ioannidis
A new festival is born. The important thing is that it has some special characteristics. These answer some questions: Why Lidoriki? What is special about this film festival? The idea was the idea of the artistic director, Stavros Parcharidis, director and actor. The 1st Lidoriki Short Film Festival will take place in Lidoriki, from August 2 to 4, 2024.
According to the artistic director of the Lidoriki Short Film Festival, Stavros Parcharidis: “Suddenly I found myself among the narrative of a women’s battle that took place in the place against the conquerors, during the revolution of 1821. Right behind where I was sitting was the entrance to an old summer cinema with the glamorous name Astron. I don’t know why, but I felt that this place was ready to welcome not only a dance festival, which exists, but also a festival that, through the moving image, would celebrate, figuratively and literally, the historical and cultural heritage of the region. In a way, the Battle of the Women, unknown to many.”.
Just as women fought alone, the films will be directed by women only. Stavros Parcharidis collaborated with Giannis Fragoulis, film critic and performing arts theorist, who is responsible for the production organization and the selection of the Festival’s films, and with Argyro Langouranis, director of the Festival. The unique feature of this Festival had been found. 23 films will be screened at the Festival. Maria Papatzelou, visual artist, designed the awards.

The first one is by Stavros Parcharidis which will be on the subject of the direction the director gives to the actor. The second is by Yannis Fragoulis who will explore the importance of character analysis for writing the script, in the beginning, and for directing, in the end.
Cleoni Flesa will talk about women directors in Greek cinema. From Maria Plyta to the present day, women directors have given Greek cinema a different flavour. It’s a good opportunity to talk about them in this festival. Her film “Eleni Boukouri-Altamoura: the first Greek woman painter” (56 min.) will be screened at the opening ceremony.
A good festival cannot only have films to be screened. It is the side events that make it beautiful. At the Lidoriki Short Film Festival there will be some important events.
Alexandros Hachalis, musician, took over the music event at the opening of the Festival, as a continuation of the work of Vangelis Papathanasiou. A concert of very high standards that will adorn the Festival and will let the notes that cause pleasure and pride to the Greek listeners spread in Lidoriki.
Makis Exarchopoulos will speak about the historicity of the place, the battle of the women and the steps of the Exodites of Messolonghi that mark the historicity of the place. The journalist and historian at the Lidoriki Short Film Festival will give us a picture of history as it exists, in this place, and nowadays, if we take the trouble to discover it.
At the Festival we will honour the important director Anastasia Christoforidou. Her films have been awarded at various festivals. They are examples of high artistic style. Her gaze focuses on the human soul and tries to reveal its passions and joys.
The other honoured person is Andreas Marianos. He may be a man, but in his films the aim was to explore the soul of man. In this narrative journey, the woman played a leading role. This director, actor and writer passed away a few weeks ago. He felt that the Lidoriki Short Film Festival should be honoured as he deserved, even after his death.
The Festival also honours actress Mary Vidalis for her overall contribution to film and theatre, as well as to local government, to date. Mary Vidali will be present at the Lidoriki Short Film Festival.
The films that will be screened in the competition section of the Lidoriki Short Film Festival will compete for the awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Music, Best Music, Best Photography, Best Editing, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Actor and Audience Award.
The Jury of the Festival consists of Makis Exarchopoulos (journalist, writer, researcher), Eleni Stathopoulou (writer), Alexandros Hachalis (musician), Zacharoula Papadakis (screenwriter) and Kleoni Flesas (director).
The opening ceremony of the Festival will take place on Friday 2 August and the closing ceremony on Sunday 4 August 2024. The concert of Alexandros Hachalis will take place on Friday 2 August at the church of Agios Georgios, Lidorikiou.
The screenings of the films will be held at the Astron Summer Cinema, the contestants, and at the Cultural Centre of Lidoriki, those of the parallel events, this three-day event.
The organization of the Festival is supported by Kostas Koutsoumbas, Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection of Lidorikiou, and Lambros Rodis, President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Orchomenos, member of the Board of Directors of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Greece and Vice President.
The Cultural Association has undertaken the hosting, the design of the poster and the programme, the technical support and the accounting, assisted by volunteers.
Let the women’s struggle be the reference point. Let the struggle of women filmmakers remind us of the important role of women in cinema and, in general, of the difficulties of survival of filmmakers in this artistic field without extensive financial assistance from the Greek state.
